Literacy/Writing
The literacy program and learning goals of the Auburn School Department, and here at Sherwood Heights Elementary School is structured and aligned to the State and school district's learning goals/standards.
Each year the Kindergarten teachers here at Sherwood Heights work very hard to make sure that we integrate best practice into our literacy workshops. Given that reading is one of the most important skills we will develop in Kindergarten a lot of our focus is centered around letter & sound recognition, spelling & sound patterns and of course making sure we have lots of time to practice reading. As a class we will be working very hard to build up our stamina, which allows us to be on task the whole working time. Student's independent work time (centers) allows me, as the teacher, to give more in-depth intense instruction to small groups and individual students. This is also the time when I can check in with each student and discuss their individual learning goals.
We are currently working with the MyView literacy program. You can learn more about this program by visiting:

Research shows that the best way to become a better reader is to read, and to read books that are at the appropriate level, in class we call these "just right" books. It is my goal to give students ample time to practice their reading skills, and encourage them to see their reading potential. One way to help inspire enthusiastic readers is to provide texts that are interesting and engaging for each reader. In addition, reading those "just right " books is the best way to grow as a reader.
